What is ATS—and why does it matter?

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System—a tool used by companies to help manage large volumes of job applications. It doesn’t reject candidates or make hiring decisions, but it scans your resume and presents it to recruiters in a simplified format.

That means:

✔️ Your resume must be easy to scan (no complex formatting)

✔️ It should include the right keywords from the job description

✔️ All key details (contact info, job titles, skills) must be in the main body, not in headers or images

If your resume isn’t ATS-friendly, it can look blank or messy in the recruiter’s system—making it harder for them to spot your value quickly.

How many years of experience do you have recruiting or operating in ATS daily?

I’ve been focused on resume optimization since 2021, and while I haven’t worked as a recruiter, I’ve collaborated with many to understand how ATS is actually used in practice.

I’ve also led a number of interviews and reviewed resumes myself in past roles, though hiring was just one of several responsibilities I held.I started a few years ago because I kept seeing qualified, talented people miss out on opportunities, not because they lacked experience, but because their resumes didn’t reflect their value.

That’s what pushed me to dive into resume strategy. As I gained experience, I naturally looked deeper into ATS. I realized there was a lot of misleading advice online, so I began researching how it really works and had open conversations with recruiters to validate everything I now teach.
